In terms of the requirements of the Pharmacy Act, 53 of 1974, as amended, Council is responsible to establish, develop, maintain and control universally acceptable standards of practice in the various categories of persons required to be registered and to uphold and safeguard the rights of the general public to universally acceptable standards of pharmacy practice in both the private and public sectors.

Council implements the above objectives by developing good pharmacy practice (GPP) standards and codes of conduct for the categories of persons and the services which may be provided in the various of pharmacies, and the conditions under which these services may be provided.

Council monitors the standards of practice by conducting inspections, approving pharmacy premises for purpose of training interns and pharmacist's assistants, and recommending to the South African Director-General of Health the issuing of pharmacy licences.
